About My Username
My username is the title of an R.E.M. song, from the album Fables Of The Reconstruction. It was my second choice after mythsandlegends, but alas and alack, that one was already taken. The name I use is from the lyrics of the Paul Simon song "All Around The World, Or The Myth of Fingerprints" (which dovetails nicely with my love of CSI).

About My Journal
I feel anonymity is the better part of valour on the internet when your boss, bank and future enemies are only a click away, but I really only friends lock posts when there's too much personal information. I have opinions, which I sometimes put forth here. I have obsessions, which I write about frequently. Sometimes this writing takes the form of fannish wankery, fangirl squee or fanfiction.

About Me
I'm old enough to know better, but I still usually do it anyway. I'm an odd mix of old-fashioned and future-minded. My politics are decidedly left-wing but I dissociate myself from parties and groups because I dislike their tendencies to be batshit insane. I'm bisexual, and tend be gender ambiguous. I have an intense hatred of gender stereotypes and the need of Western society to place eveyone into neatly labeled little slots. I'm frequently arbitrary and chaotic.

My first love is and always will be music. (If you want to see what I'm listening to right now, click here.) I have fairly diverse tastes in music, though I have a core love for certain sounds and types of music. My ironclad favorites are Celtic music (real, not imitation), folk music, power pop, late 80s/early 90s "alternative" and the classics of popular music (Beatles, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Paul Simon, etc.).

At heart, I'm a thwarted opera singer. I have the raw talent, but lack the training, disposition and early support it would have required to pursue such a career. Instead, I take that need to express myself through sound and channel it into words. My lament has always been that singing is a necessarily demonstrable talent. You have to be willing to make a fool of yourself in front of people to know if they like your work. With writing, you don't have to be present while people are observing your art, and even if your work is panned, the blow is so much softer. It's the coward's way out, but there you have it.

My favorite words are poems, and I'm a faulty, badly wired poet who insists on spewing words into the ether regardless of my level of talent. I grew up reading both Greek myths and Anne McCaffrey so my tastes in the written word are wildly divergent. About my writing: I'm an amateur grammarian, and I try to stay current on accepted style but I also try to take the poet's view of reworking language to fit my needs.

A disclaimer: I love slash. If you don't know what that is, it's fanfiction about same-sex couples and situations. I enjoy reading it, writing it, rolling around in it. In other words, I'm talking about big gay sex and/or big gay love between real or fictional people. If you positively cannot handle that, you know how to close your browser window and never need to visit this URL again. I'm fine with people who just aren't into slash, that's no big deal - but homophobia isn't something I'm fine with.
